Music and Revolution: Cultural Change in Socialist Cuba

Prof. Moore will present an overview of his new book, Music and Revolution: Cultural Change in Socialist Cuba, and provide an introduction to the most prominent musical styles that have emerged in Cuba since 1959. These include dance music styles such as timba, nueva trova, folkloric drumming and religious music. Moore will discuss the policies and cultural institutions that have shaped the development of the arts, and the extent to which music has continued to serve as a forum for social critique.

Robin Moore has received multiple awards for his work, including fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the National Humanities Center. His primary research interests include music and nationalism, music and race relations, popular music study and socialist art aesthetics.
