About The New Cuba Debate

The recent past has posed new questions and perspectives about what type of society Cuba will or should be in the years to come. Within Cuba, fresh thinking has emanated from processes of adaptation, reform, renewal, and contestation following the closing of the ‘Periodo Especial.’ The aging of the historical leadership of the revolution has raised new questions about what path the country will follow in the future. In the US, the increasing pluralism within the Cuban-American community, the emergence of new actors interested in Cuba, and growing criticism of the stiff legal framework governing Cuba policy have led to calls for increasing flexibility or even change in policy toward the island. The Cuba Project’s New Cuba Debate is a series of symposia that seek to clarify the characteristics and implications of these new arguments and positions. It convenes different stakeholders to focus on US policy toward Cuba, as well as debates within Cuba, across the Cuban diaspora, and within the international community. The results will be assessed and published as a scholarly policy-oriented book.
